I AM THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE 11-25-2017 I remember that on one occasion my father mentioned something with relation to the size of things, that they can be larger than you or smaller than you. I should confess that I do not remember the context in which he told me those words, but they have had a tremendous impact in the way I see life in general. Those words gave me the sense that I am the measure of things not only physically, but also in the spiritual and intellectual space, that even when I am not very tall or very gifted in intelligence or spiritually, I am the measure! And that makes me the center of the universe, which is to say that in my own perception as a living entity with conscience of my own existence, I am the center of all the things that surround me. Now, this simplicity with which each one of us as human beings can use to justify an exaggerated narcissism (Hitler), can also be utilized to justify humility (Mother Teresa) or a sense of extreme responsibility, "I am responsible for all what happens in the universe" (Gandhi). The fact that each one of us is the center of the universe is the base of human individuality that gives us permission to judge according to the limit of our experiences, which allow us to decide what is good and what is not, many times against what functions in the natural rhythm of the universe. We cannot deny that what gives us the awareness of our own existence lives in the body of an animal, and that as animals we have a series of instincts that are outside of our control and some that we can modified; those that we can modified are intimately related to education in the sense that we know what they do, how they function and how they can be manipulated for good or bad for them or for us. One of our stronger animal instincts is that of socialization which compels us to live together and requires us to protect each other, the man to woman, the mother to son, the men to family, the warrior to tribe, the priest to spirituality and the king who is responsible for all (?). This instinct, with its complexity, has been the most abused in the history of humanity by narcissists, shamans and extremist rulers who have excluded others’ right to be the center of the universe, and have converted the present times into the fascist excesses in which we are living. Protecting our individuality is the most important human task of the post-modernity.
